Thus, this is a comprehensive reference to Galle Fort, providing information on the attractions, activities, accommodation options, dining establishments, and useful travel advice.
The influx of tourists to Galle has experienced a significant surge in recent years, and the reasons for this trend are readily apparent to me.
The old Dutch fortress in Galle is a must-see attraction on any Sri Lanka itinerary, with its colonial grandeur, enticing tropical atmosphere, and authentic charm.
Galle Fort, built by the Dutch in 1663, held great significance as Sri Lanka’s primary commercial port during the Dutch Golden Age.
The fort region currently exudes a captivating allure, which is attributed to dilapidated colonial structures, bustling cobblestone alleys, and fashionable modern cafes.
Galle Fort boasts a plethora of awe-inspiring attractions, including the renowned Galle Lighthouse, the Dutch Reformed Church with its remarkable interior, and several stores lining Pedlar Street.
It is hardly unexpected that the picturesque Galle Fort has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, since it consistently impresses travelers with its abundant and interesting history.
Whether you want to come for a single day or are eager to spend many days thoroughly touring the entire fortress, this book provides comprehensive information to help you maximize your time at Galle Fort.
7 REMARKABLE ACTIVITIES TO EXPERIENCE IN GALLE FORT
1: EXPLORE THE ‘FORT WALK’ AND GET A PANORAMIC VIEW OF THE GALLE FORT
There are several compelling reasons to embark on the renowned ‘Fort Walk’, but what captivated me the most was the awe-inspiring vista that awaits upon traversing the outer ramparts of the fort.
The elevated outer walls provide stunning panoramic vistas of the fort’s distinctive tangerine-colored roofs, captivating interior, the seemingly boundless Indian Ocean, and Galle’s renowned International Cricket Ground.
The 3-hour stroll starts at the esteemed Clock Tower and guides you through all the noteworthy sights within the fort, including the Galle Lighthouse, Old Dutch Hospital, Meeran Mosque, and the All Saints Church, among others.
If you share my intention to thoroughly investigate every part of the old Galle Fort, I strongly advise embarking on this remarkable walk either in the early morning or late afternoon.
2: VISIT AND APPRECIATE THE MAGNIFICANT GALLE FORT LIGHTHOUSE
For many years, Galle Fort has been a popular destination for travelers. However, with the recent viral fame of the renowned Galle Lighthouse on Instagram, its popularity has significantly increased.
The renowned Galle Lighthouse, a charming structure with the sparkling Indian Ocean as its picturesque backdrop, is located on the southern walls of the citadel and surrounded by palm trees.
The British initially built the historical lighthouse in 1848; however, the current structure is not the original formation of the lighthouse.
Due to an unfortunate incident, the structure was engulfed in flames in 1936. However, it was subsequently repaired in 1939.
Presently, the Galle Lighthouse is unquestionably the most renowned and recognizable feature of the castle, thus making it an essential attraction to see within Galle Fort.
3: EXPLORE THE NARROW ALLEYS OF GALLE FORT
Galle Fort is abundant in stunning colonial architecture, and exploring its small, cobblestone streets is undoubtedly one of the top activities in Galle.
The distinct atmosphere that the deteriorated colonial structures create in Galle Fort distinguishes it from other parts of Sri Lanka.
Galle Fort’s attractive and VOC-like character is defined by colonial architecture, which is why it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

While Sri Lanka is generally considered safe for travelers, I consistently make it a priority to arrange my travel insurance before entering a foreign country, and I strongly recommend others to do so as well.
While we strive for seamless travel experiences, unforeseen events, such as injuries or traffic accidents, might occur at any given time. When such a situation arises, it is wiser to prioritize safety rather than regretting it later.
